About Us
Welcome to JPS Montessori School
Welcome to JPS Montessori! The Montessori offers Y5 – 5th grade classes that are newly renovated with safe and secure entryways and upgraded with 21st century learning furniture and technology tools. The Montessori allows students to learn at their own individual pace and according to their own choice of activities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery. At the JPS Montessori, children are grouped in mixed ages and abilities. Multi-age flexible grouping allows each child to find his/her own pace. This allows for constant interaction, problem solving, child to child teaching and socializatio. The children are challenged according to their ability and are never bored.
The Montessori Method
The Montessori method emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching or reading. Learning leads to concentration, motivation, self-discipline and love of learning.
What is the Montessori Teaching Method?
- Teachers work with children on the floor or at tables rather than at the front of the classroom. The teacher’s role is to observe and guide children’s learning rather than instruct. The teacher is a quiet observer, guiding if she/he sees that a child may need assistance.
- The teacher’s responsibility is to create the environment that entices and enhances the development of each child.
- Teachers keep notes and records on each child’s progress and introduce lessons according to the needs of the children in the class.
Kindergarten Curriculum (5 to 6 years of age)
- Focus is on readiness and socialization skills, along with providing varied levels of exposure to academics to prepare children for their educational journey.
- Children experience a wide scope of cognitive learning games, large and small motor activities, creative and dramatic play, art, literature and emergent literacy, music, science, and listening materials through the use of Learning Centers.
- A balance between free creative play, large group activities, small group sessions and individual participation according to each child’s level of growth is provided.
- Children are encouraged to engage in self-expression.
"Montessori is an education for independence, preparing not just for school, but for life”.
- Dr. Maria Montessori
Elementary Curriculum (6 to 10 years of age)
- The elementary curriculum (6 to 10 years of age) combines 1st-5th grades in multi-age classrooms.
- Hands-on math, science and language arts are cornerstones of the innovative and comprehensive Montessori Method.
- The academic curriculum also aligns with Michigan state standards and frameworks – and goes above and beyond.
- Spanish language and integrated cultural studies, including history and geography, promote global awareness and 21st century skills.
